The new Community Grants & Programs Department has partnered with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to administer a community-wide campaign: Tu Salud Si Cuenta.
As part of the campaign, UTHSCSA has granted to the City the salary of a community outreach worker along with supplies, equipment, and plans for environmental changes. Although the partnership was formalized in October 2013, the department has been working with UTHSCSA and Cameron County for several years in an effort to make this happen.
Tu Salud ¡Si Cuenta! Is an ambitious program offering great educational and technical support. It features Promotora training (for the community health workers) and community instruction with the ultimate goal of disease prevention and healthier habits. It seeks health behavior change through public and professional education and training by focusing on increasing physical activity participation and nutritious eating among low-income residents living in Cameron, Hidalgo, Galveston, Nueces, and Webb counties. This two-step process trains promotoras using curriculum addressing the targeted behaviors as approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The second step will be to work with partner organizations in the priority counties where evidence-based community-wide campaigns exist to implement Tu Salud ¡Si Cuenta! outreach. This outreach program is specifically designed to use technology and non-directive motivational techniques to help participants increase physical activity participation and nutritious eating. An evaluation will assess the effectiveness ofthe program for potential expansion.
