Backflow Prevention Device
Ordinance No. 2253 adopted by the City Commission on May 14, 2002 and in accordance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the City of San Benito in protecting the water supply of the city from contamination or pollution due to any existing or potential cross connections requires a Backflow Prevention Device be installed whenever:
- The nature and extent of any activity of the premises, or the materials used in connection with any activity of the premises, or materials stored on the premises could contaminate or pollute the drinking water supply
- Materials of a toxic or hazardous nature are being used such that, if back siphon age should occur, a health hazard could result
- A fire sprinkler system is connected to the city’s water system
- A lawn sprinkler system is connected to the city’s water system
The device is required to be installed at the business at the expense of the user, either at the city’s water service connection or within the premises. All backflow devices must be registered with the city indicating the date of installation, make, model, serial number of the device and an initial test report. All backflow devices installed within the territory served by the City shall be tested immediately upon installation and at least annually thereafter by a state certified tester.
