UT Brownsville

The University of Texas at Brownsville has been a member of The University of Texas System since 1991. In cooperation with Texas Southmost College, The University serves more than 12,000 students at its campus located in Brownsville, Texas. In Partnership with Texas Southmost College, The University offers a wide range of courses for Associate and Baccalaureate degrees to graduate classes and continuing education.

UT Pan American

UTPA has a total of 17,337 students coming from 28 different states, and over 40 Countries around the world. UTPA enrolls the highest number and highest percentage of Hispanics (86%) among Texas public universities. Of the total student population, 2,261 are graduate students participating in 48 graduate level programs. UTPA is the 10th largest university in the state and the 5th largest in the UT System. The Hispanic outlook in higher education lists UTPA among its top 100 best U.S. Colleges for Hispanics. UTPA offers 54 bachelor’s degree programs, 50 master’s, 2 doctoral, and one cooperative doctoral pharmacy program. UTPA educates the most Mexican-American Students in the nation.

South Texas College

South Texas College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor or Applied Technology, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees, and certificates. STC expected to begin the Fall 2008 semester with more than 20,000 students. A faculty and staff of more than 1,600 serve STC’s five campuses.

San Benito CISD

The San Benito Consolidated Independent School District prides itself in offering progressive, innovative courses and programs to a student population of just over 10,000. The district provides students with top-notch academic programs, a wide array of extracurricular activities and state-of-the-art technology. Students begin their education with a solid foundation.

The district focuses on early childhood development by placing the majority of the district’s instructional aides in pre-kinder, kinder and first grade classrooms. This helps assist the teachers so that students can gain the fundamental skills necessary to succeed academically. Approximately 1,400 employees help students achieve academic excellence and prepare them for the challenge of becoming lifelong learners.

San Benito CISD leaders have been planning for future growth in an effort to accommodate the growing numbers of students enrolling in the district. The district has built state-of-the-art facilities, thanks to bonds approved by voters in 1997, 1999 and 2004. The last of the 1999 bond projects, the San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy, opened its doors in the fall of 2004.

There are 15 existing campuses and a new athletic stadium named in honor of Olympian and three-time gold medal winner Bobby Morrow. Other improvements are the result of a recently approved bond project. Included are:

  • New cafeterias at Dr. Cash Elementary and Ed Downs Elementary.
  • San Benito High School science lab upgrades.
  • Construction of four classrooms and technology labs at the Sonny Brazil Agriculture Science Complex.
  • New classroom wings, a new choir hall, physical education facilities and upgraded science labs at Miller Jordan Middle School.
