Cards

Library cards are free. You must show 2 proofs of address (both proofs must have the SAME address) when you update or get a new card. Usually this will be a Texas ID or driver’s license and a piece of mail, but it can include a variety of things that have your address printed on it. If you are going to use the Internet, you must also read and sign the Internet Acceptance Use Policy. You will be responsible, you will pay for books, lost and overdue materials, & fines on your card or your child's card. By getting a card you agree to pay.

 

Circulation Policy

There is no limit on the number of regular books you can check out.  These can be checked out for 3 weeks. You may check out 2 test books or Ingles Sin Barreras per card for 1 week. Adults may check out 3 videos per household for a 3-day period. Videos may not be renewed.

 

Fine Schedule

Regular overdue books $0.25 per day.

Overdue test materials and videos $1.00 per day

Videos that are put in the book drop $1.00 each

Videos that are not rewound $1.00 each

Lost or damaged cards $5.00

 

CALL-IN RECHECK

An extension on a library book can be done by calling to library circulation department and requesting a recheck.  Rechecks cannot be done on test books and videos.

 

Rechecks are not allowed if items are past due.

 

Book drop

The book drop located by the front door is open 24 hours a day.

 

Ownership

The library belongs to the community. It is a department of the city and operated with tax dollars, grant money and private donations.

 

Support the Library

An often overlooked way to support the Library is to speak up to the Mayor, City Commissioners, and the City Manager. Click here to send an email or voice your oppinion. The Library needs your cash and material donations.  The Friends of the San Benito Public Library are currently raising $10,000 to buy an electronic sign for the building. The Friends also have ongoing book sale in the library.  We accept donations of books and magazines. They must be clean and in good condition.

 

Resources

The library has a large book and DVD collection, 70 magazines subscriptions, and 5 daily newspapers. The library has a small collection of Spanish materials in adult and children levels, as well as books on tape, magazines, and newspapers. Thousands. Thousands of books are available on the internet through the TexShare Databases.

 

ADDITIONAL SERVICES

 

·         Conference Room

The conference room can be reserved free of charge as long it is for non- profit meetings.  The Conference room is equipped with a laptop and projector, Microsoft Office products, television and DVD player. Seating capacity is 30.

 

·         Interlibrary Loan

Books and materials not carried by the San Benito Public Library may be borrowed from other Libraries through Interlibrary Loan.  

 

·         Copies

The library has a copy machine in 8 1/2 x 11 in. (letter) or 8 1/2 x 14 in. (legal) size paper for $ .20 per sheet.

 

·         Faxes

Faxes of up to 3 pages may be sent or received at the front desk for $2, each additional page will be 50˘.

 

·         Microfilm/Microfiche reader/printer

The Microfilm/Microfiche reader is also available with $ .20 per print out page.

 

Storytime

During the school year, Story Time is held on Fridays at 10:00 am for children ages 3-5. 

 

Summer Reading Program

The Summer Reading Program is held in June and July for children in grades K-5.   The program has different themes and is held to encourage kids to read, learn, and explore. It is designed for school age children who have completed the first grade.  Please check back for dates and times.

 

Volunteers

Volunteers help the library in a number of ways.   If you have time to help us on a regular basis or just for an afternoon, we would appreciate your time.  We need volunteers to help with processing books, working on the book sale and planning children’s activities.

 

Friends of the library

Friends of the library is an organization of citizens desirous of supporting the library.  Friends raise money and awareness of the library in the community.  Memberships are $5.00. per individual.   The library staff may be contacted for memberships.
