[ARCHIVED] City Supports Governor's Declaration

The City of San Benito supports Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to issue a State Disaster Declaration as part of proactive measures underway to prevent the spread of COVID 19, the Corona Virus.

The governor made the decision today (Friday) after receiving requests from leaders throughout the state, asking for the declaration so they could plan for additional preventive measures that could be costly.

“There is no need to panic or become afraid,” Mayor Ben Gomez said. “The declaration is simply a legal mechanism that will allow cities and counties to be eligible for reimbursement from state and federal sources on costs directly associated with dealing with the Corona Virus,” he said.

There still is no imminent threat locally, and the City of San Benito is practicing basic preventive measures in dealing with the Corona Virus that is affecting other parts of the country and state.

City officials will participate in a telephone conference with Cameron County leaders tomorrow morning to communicate and share information on current situations and further define potential actions, should the need arise.

Additionally, the governor reported that the State is upscaling dramatically and quickly, the number of testing facilities, that will provide information on the actual number of confirmed cases throughout the state.
